Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
About the Championships
What are the World Stone Skimming Championships?
The World Stone Skimming Championships are an annual, unique sporting spectacle held on the tiny, historic island of Easdale, Scotland. Competitors and spectators from around the globe gather to witness competitive stone skimming in a disused, water-filled quarry – the world’s first dedicated stone skimming arena.
Where do the skimming stones come from?
The specially selected skimming stones are made entirely from Easdale slate itself, intrinsically linking the competition to the island’s rich slate mining history.
Is the event just a competition?
No, it’s more than just a contest of skill; it’s a vibrant community celebration and a vital fundraiser. All money raised goes to local charities supporting the community of Easdale and its neighbouring islands. The championships attract worldwide attention, with competitors from over 25 different countries normally participating in front of over 1,500 spectators. Over 80% of attendees came from outside the local area, with many international competitors flying in specifically for the event.
When and where do the championships take place?
The championships are held annually on Easdale Island, near Oban, Scotland, PA34 4TB. The 2026 championships will take place in September 2026 (exact date to be confirmed), from 11 am onwards.
Is the event family-friendly?
Yes, the World Stone Skimming Championships are a vibrant community celebration designed to be enjoyed by all ages, making it a truly family-friendly event.
Do I need to be a professional to take part?
Absolutely not! The World Stone Skimming Championships are open to everyone, regardless of skill level. It’s a fun and inclusive event where skimming legends are made, but you certainly don’t need to be a professional to join in the excitement.
Tickets & Entry
How do I enter the 2026 championships?
We now use a ballot system to ensure fair access for everyone. The ballot is open until 4th April 2026. Simply complete the online ballot form and pay the £5 entry fee. After the ballot closes, we’ll conduct several draws and email you the results.
Why have you introduced a ballot system?
After years of tickets selling out within minutes, we introduced the ballot to give everyone an equal chance to compete. No more frantic refreshing at midnight or server crashes – just a fair draw for all entries received during the ballot period.
When does the ballot open and close?
- Ballot Opens: Now!
- Ballot Closes: 4th April 2026 (11:59pm)
- Draw Conducted: Within 2 days of closing (around 6th April)
How much does it cost to enter?
The ballot entry fee is £5 per person (non-refundable). This reserves your spot in the draw and helps support the running costs of the event, our local community, and local charities.
If you’re successful in the draw, you’ll then purchase your competition ticket separately:
- Adults: £20
- Children/Juniors (under 16): £5
What are the different entry types?
There are two entry types:
Single Adult Entry: One competitor only. Ideal if you’re competing solo.
Family Entry: Must include at least one child/junior (under 16). You can register up to 2 adults + 3 children/juniors total. Family entries get a higher chance in the draw!
Important: Junior tickets cannot be exchanged for adult tickets later.
Can I register multiple adults in one entry?
No, each adult competitor needs their own separate ballot entry. However, you can use the same email address for multiple entries.
What happens after I enter the ballot?
After the ballot closes on 4th April, we’ll conduct the first draw within 2 days. We’ll email you to let you know if you’ve been successful or not.
What if I’m drawn in the ballot?
If you’re successful, you’ll receive an email with a registration link. You’ll have:
- 4 days to register your details (or your competitors’ details if you’re entering children)
- Then 3 days to purchase your competition ticket(s)
Make sure you complete both steps within the deadlines, or your place will be released to someone else.
What if I’m not drawn in the ballot?
If you’re unsuccessful this year, you’ll automatically get improved odds for the 2027 ballot. The more times you enter without being drawn, the better your chances become.
Is the ballot entry fee refundable?
No, the £5 ballot entry fee is non-refundable. This fee supports the running costs of the championships and our local community, regardless of whether you’re drawn or not.
I have automatic qualification – do I need to enter the ballot?
No! If you finished in the top 50 overall, top 10 adult females, or placed 1st or 2nd in any category last year, you have automatic entry and should not enter the ballot. Check your email for your personal registration code, or contact us at registration@stoneskimming.com.
How does automatic qualification work?
Anyone placed 1st or 2nd in any category, plus the top 10 Adult Female skimmers and the 50 top skimmers overall, will qualify automatically for the 2027 Championships. The top 50 skimmers are determined by the top 50 throws recorded, regardless of category.
Automatic qualifiers receive a personal registration code by email and do not need to enter the ballot. Competition ticket fees (£20 adults, £5 juniors) will still apply.
Automatic qualification may be rescinded if the WSSC feels a competitor’s presence will be to the detriment, or safety, of the championship.
Competition Day
What is the check-in process?
Checking-in at the registration desk is mandatory, and check-in closes at 11 am. Regardless of your tossing order number, you must be on the island and checked in by 11:00 am.
What is the ‘Tossing Order’ and how does it work?
We distribute the ‘Tossing Order’ in advance of each year’s event. Please pay attention to the number next to your name and make your way to the throwing area prior to your name being announced (e.g., if you are number 55, get to the throwing area by number 45).
What if I’m in the wrong category?
Don’t worry if you find yourself in the wrong category in the ‘Tossing Order’. Please let our team know when you check-in on the day.
How does the Team Competition work?
To enter the Team Competition, all team members must already be registered for this year’s Championships. Your team can consist of up to four individuals from any category. The combined length of the three throws from each individual entrant will be added towards the team’s total, and the winning team will have the largest cumulative distance thrown by all four entrants. An individual can win in both the individual event and as part of a team from their one set of three throws. Team entry is £10 (£2.50 per person) and will be taken at check-in, where we’ll register your team on the day.
What should I wear?
The stone skimming quarry itself requires descending an uneven, natural rock formation by foot. Only competitors will need to descend to the quarry, and they must wear good, sturdy footwear and be mindful of the weather and its impact underfoot.
Where can I find the rules?
It’s the World Championships, so there are rules! We have a handy page detailing the rules; please have a look and familiarise yourself with them.

Visiting the Island

Easdale Island is a small, quiet, rural community. Please minimise noise, especially in the early mornings and late evenings. Take all your litter home with you or use designated bins. Respect private property and stick to public paths. We also encourage you to support local businesses in Ellenabeich, on Seil, and Easdale Island (our shops, cafes, and pubs) to contribute to the local economy. Patience and courtesy are appreciated due to the significant increase in visitors during the championships.
Can I bring my dog to Easdale Island?
Dogs are very welcome on Easdale Island! However, please be aware that we are a haven for ground nesting birds and some livestock, including chickens, are free-range on the island. Additionally, please be a responsible owner and clean up after your dog immediately, disposing of any mess appropriately.
