About the Championships

What are the World Stone Skimming Championships?

The World Stone Skimming Championships are an annual, unique sporting spectacle held on the tiny, historic island of Easdale, Scotland. Competitors and spectators from around the globe gather to witness competitive stone skimming in a disused, water-filled quarry – the world’s first dedicated stone skimming arena.

Where do the skimming stones come from?

The specially selected skimming stones are made entirely from Easdale slate itself, intrinsically linking the competition to the island’s rich slate mining history.

Is the event just a competition?

No, it’s more than just a contest of skill; it’s a vibrant community celebration and a vital fundraiser. All money raised goes to local charities supporting the community of Easdale and its neighbouring islands. The championships attract worldwide attention, with competitors from over 25 different countries normally participating in front of over 1000 spectators. Over 80% of attendees came from outside the local area, with many international competitors flying in specifically for the event.

When and where do the championships take place?

The championships are held annually on Easdale Island, near Oban, Scotland, PA34 4TB. The next event will be in September 2026. Exact date TBC, from 11 am to 11 pm.

Is the event family-friendly?

Yes, the World Stone Skimming Championships are a vibrant community celebration designed to be enjoyed by all ages, making it a truly family-friendly event.

Do I need to be a professional to take part?

Absolutely not! The World Stone Skimming Championships are open to everyone, regardless of skill level. It’s a fun and inclusive event where skimming legends are made, but you certainly don’t need to be a professional to join in the excitement.

What is the check-in process?

Checking-in at the registration desk is mandatory, and check-in closes at 11 am. Regardless of your tossing order number, you must be on the island and checked in by 11:00 am.

What is the ‘Tossing Order’ and how does it work?

We distribute the ‘Tossing Order’ in advance of each year’s event. Please pay attention to the number next to your name and make your way to the throwing area prior to your name being announced (e.g., if you are number 55, get to the throwing area by number 45).

What if I’m in the wrong category?

Don’t worry if you find yourself in the wrong category in the ‘Tossing Order’. Please let our team know when you check-in on the day, and your category can be changed.

How does the Team Competition work?

To enter the Team Competition, all team members must already be registered for this year’s Championships. Your team can consist of up to four individuals from any category. The combined length of the three throws from each individual entrant will be added towards the team’s total, and the winning team will have the largest cumulative distance thrown by all four entrants. An individual can win in both the individual event and as part of a team from their one set of three throws. Team entry is £10 (£2.50 per person) and will be taken at check-in, where we’ll register your team on the day. Please pay in cash if possible.

Is there automatic qualification for the next championship?

Yes, anyone placed 1st or 2nd in any category, plus the top 10 Adult Female skimmers and the 50 top skimmers overall, will qualify automatically for the next Championship. The top 50 skimmers are determined by the top 50 throws recorded, regardless of category. An entry fee will still be required, and automatic qualification may be rescinded by the WSSC if a competitor’s presence is deemed detrimental or a safety concern.

How do I get to Easdale Island?

Easdale Island is Scotland’s smallest permanently inhabited island and is car-free. The ferry to Easdale Island departs from Ellenabeich on the mainland. The drive to Ellenabeich involves navigating a single-track road, so please be mindful of passing places. Car sharing is highly encouraged due to limited parking.

Where can I park on the mainland?

Designated car parks are available at Seil Island Community Hall and Ellenabeich Car Park. Any funds raised from parking go directly to local community projects on the Isle of Seil.

What is the Easdale Ferry like and how much does it cost?

The Easdale ferry is a small, passenger-only speedboat-type vessel that takes only 10 people at a time. The cost is £2.70 per person. Boarding the ferry requires managing two steep steps.

How can I be a respectful visitor?

Easdale Island is a small, quiet, rural community. Please minimise noise, especially in the early mornings and late evenings. Take all your litter home with you or use designated bins. Respect private property and stick to public paths. We also encourage you to support local businesses in Ellenabeich, on Seil, and Easdale Island (our shops, cafes, and pubs) to contribute to the local economy. Patience and courtesy are appreciated due to the significant increase in visitors during the championships.

Can I bring my dog to Easdale Island?

Dogs are very welcome on Easdale Island! However, please be aware that we are a haven for ground nesting birds and some livestock, including chickens, are free-range on the island. For the safety and well-being of all animals and residents, all dogs must be kept on a lead at all times while on the island. Additionally, please be a responsible owner and clean up after your dog immediately, disposing of any mess appropriately.
