world stone skimming championships Easdale Island Scotland
Homecoming Scotland 2014

The World Stone Skimming Championships 2014 will take place on Sunday 28 September 2014 on Easdale Island, near Oban in Argyll, Scotland.

2013 design by Isabella MacLean.
2013 design by Kyle Cooper

Easdale Island

is the smallest permanently inhabited island of the Inner Hebrides. It was once the centre of a thriving Scottish slate mining industry, and one of the disused quarries forms a perfect arena for the World Stone Skimming Championships.

The championships are held every year on the last Sunday in September. Anyone of any age and any level of skill can enter. Each competitor is allowed 3 skims using specially selected Easdale slate skimming stones.

For a skim to qualify the stone must bounce at least three times - it is then judged on the distance achieved before it sinks.

T-shirt designs

The 2013 t-shirt logos were designed by Easdale School pupils, Kyle Cooper, who designed the logo for the front of the shirt (above right), while the back logo (above left) was designed by Isabella MacLean. T-shirts bearing these designs will be available on the day. We also have a range of generic goodies for you to choose from including jackets, hoodies, t-shirts, hats and mugs.

We are now having to restrict the maximum number of entrants to 350. This is simply due to the amount of time that it takes to let everyone have their throw, hold the awards’ ceremony and then ensure people manage off the island whilst the ferry is within its operating hours. We will do all we can to ensure that people are made aware when the maximum number of entrants has been reached. The organisers very much regret any inconvenience that this may cause.

Registration for the championships takes place at Easdale Island Community Hall from 11.00am until 1.00pm on the day OR when we reach a total of 350 entrants. If you would like to compete just turn up as there are no qualifying rounds.

The competition starts at 12 noon - get down to the quarry side early to avoid the queues!

For the full competition rules, categories and entrance fees, please see our about section.

The Pre-Skim Party

On the Saturday night before the event, come and warm up at the Pre-skim Party, in Easdale Island Community Hall where there will be a licensed bar, live music, and where children are most welcome.

Pat Fulgoni of Kava Kava

For live music in 2013 we had the first visit to Easdale Island of festival favourites Kava Kava.

Kava Kava from Huddersfield, emit a distinctive psychedelic funk soul festival sound and have notched up dates at events as prestigious as Beijing Midi Festival, SXSW in the States, Trutnov Festival, Glastonbury (3 times). DJ Magazine proclaimed they "should be on every funk and disco playlist, period!" NME say "gorgeous new psychedelic funk" and the band toured the USA in 2010 following the releases of the band's single "Clarity" (with remixes from Slovak DJ B Complex).
